car time

I just spent about two hours with my eighteen year-old as we drove to the drivers license division of the DMV for him to get his learner's permit. That's right, learner's permit and he is eighteen. But he has always been non-aggressive, so a driver's license at 16 wasn't really in the cards for him.

As we drove we had the great occasion to visit about things that matter. He talked to me about his feelings about God, his character traits he is working on, and his reflections on his older brother who is in Africa right now. And in turn, I talked to him about college, marriage, the big picture. This kid kills me. He isn't perfect. He has some quirks that my husband and I try to help him with here and there, but who doesn't?

I tend to blog about this son a lot, maybe because his imminent departure weighs on me. But he is a gem. He wants to do what is right. He is like a magnifying glass on the small good parts of me and Geo.

He really is a great kid, Kazzy. You have a lot to be proud of. This is my favorite of his Eagle photos, too. :)

Congratulations to Adam on his Eagle and his learner's permit. He's a good kid who's on the right track. Here comes the freedom with a driver's license for him and you!

What a handsome boy! I hope my kids can wait till they're 18 for their licenses...I will feel much better about that!

I didn't get my driver's license until I was 19 but I don't suppose that makes you feel any more confident in the late bloomers, does it? (JK) (sort of). He's a doll! He looks like he has quite the sense of humor! I love what you say about the magnifying glass--it's so true about kids (or some kids) isn't it?

It is such a wonderful feeling to be so proud of our children. I love to look at my kids and analyze what they get from me and what they get from Mark. Amazing how are kids are all so different.

Nobody's perfect - at least it sounds like he's trying :)

All that AND he's cute? Sheesh!

There is nothing like a quirky boy to keep you on your toes. I have two of them! That's what makes them even more genuine too. They are who they are and they do not apologize for it. Sometimes we apologize for them...but, they don't care. Isn't that awesome!!! They don't care!!! I wish I didn't care about some things! I would be a MUCH better person!

Kids are amazing aren't they. I look at what Jacob learns and realize that before I know it he will be where your son is now. Weird thought!

Congrats on being such a great parent and not giving him the permit until you felt he was ready!

18 is a good age to get a DL actually. I would have felt a lot better if my kids waited. Of course, it was convenient for me that they didn't need me to drive them around.

Your son sounds like a great kid. You are very blessed.

You both wonderful parents, lots of love and understanding. Knowing your roots I understand how you feel and wish I could express feelings a and thoughts as you do.
Lots of love to you and your family.

I'm happy for you, Kazz. Your hard work has paid off. What a great feeling that must be.
