day 137: sawdust donuts

Sometimes we prepare ourselves for something, really thoroughly, only to be disappointed in how it turns out.  If not disappointed, then at least caught off-guard.

On our way home from St. George today, Geo and I stopped in Beaver in order to change drivers and to each get a chocolate cake donut.  Yup, a craving that we were both having simultaneously.  And who can fight against cravings when the yummy chocolate stars align?  So we happily topped off the gas tank and then ran in to the store to pick out our own donuts.  Hopping back into the car we found the quickest way to get onto the freeway ramp, and then we each picked up our treats before G took a big bite and then groaned in disgust.  "Man, this is so stale."  We were both disappointed, and after giving the staleness a few bites to change its ways, gave up and guzzled the milk to wash the sawdust down our throats.

How do I find the balance between feeling let down and rolling with things?  I don't want to buy too much into the philosophy of lowering my expectations.  This can be a good practice in small ways, but to walk around feeling great about everything, only because I expected nothing to begin with, doesn't seem right.   Ideals can be good.  Right?  Right?

That's the worst! When you spend calories but don't get what you wanted...it's like messing up on your diet.

It's a double shame that it had to be chocolate that was stale! Ideals are good! It wasn't your fault the donuts were stale! Don't EVER settle for sawdust donuts - you know there's something better out there! You did wash it down with chocolate milk, right?

i think there's a saying about shoot for the moon but if you don't make it, at least you will land among the stars. i think we always have to look to the best - in us, in our friends and family and in our world. if we don't quite get there, at least there was the effort to try.

Ideals are paramount. Especially when it comes to donuts. :-)

Not only are ideals good, they are essential. I think if we lower our expectations all the time we'll never try for anything. Just be aware that failure happens, and buy another donut at the next stop and hope it's fresh this time!

What a shame. At times like that I just think about how many calories that I just saved. Hope you have a good day back at school.

At least it was only stale chocolate donuts. From the beginning of the post I was expecting something more tragic, like when your husband went to take a bite, a semi hit you or something. But yeah, it is hard to find a balance between just going with the flow and becoming totally apathetic about everything.

From the moment I finished reading this post, I craved Hostess chocolate donettes. Not a nice thing to write in the middle of the night before fast Sunday. Needless to say, I bought my doughtnuts today and I am happy. These seem to be always reliably nasty; no disappointment for me.

This past month I have discovered that my problem is the fact that I am an idealist. sigh . . However, chocolate cake donuts are hard to find (at least around here) and it is not too much to expect that they be fresh when one does fall upon them in greedy anticipation. There is no substitute for a chocolate cake donut--none whatsoever. Signed, one who has looked far and high for a satisfying substitute to a chocolate cake donut.

Ideals are the best. They hurt when things don't measure up, but for me at least, no ideals means no hope.

You're awesome!
