Lucky Me

Here I am with my admirable, reliable, just-a-joy-to-be-around son.  He is almost eighteen, and the stereotypes just don't apply to this one.  I can't tell you how many times I come home and find him happily doing the dishes or sitting in his room reading, or even, get ready, voluntarily hanging out with his younger brothers.

Now, this blog entry is not meant to make other moms who are struggling with their youth feel bad.  Each child is so different and we had some small trials with our oldest, who is now spending two years in Kenya learning patience and tolerance.  We love them all the same, of course.  But today I got a call from a friend who, along with her husband, works with the youth in our ward (congregation).  She just called to tell me how much the two of them enjoy my son.  He is positive and responsible and fun.  As a matter of fact, the other night at dinner he informed us that he had made a promise to himself that he was not going to complain about things.  When I asked how long he planned on keeping this goal he said, "Forever."  And I believe it.

I admit that sometimes I lie awake at night and ask myself, "What have I done to deserve this child?  Where did I go so right?"

Aww! What a lucky son to have a loving mom like you. :)

I love that second picture. He sounds like a great kid (young man). And what an a amazing resolution to make at such a young age. That's terrific. I think I need both my fingers AND toes to count how many times I've tried that one! He seems like the positive kind of person that might just be able to do it. That's awesome

That is so amazing. I had exactly the same thought about little Isaac. Remind me to tell you about some of his resolutions (at age 5!). I think I'll add it to my blog. I think they're the same type, he and Isaac.

We must have done something right in a previous life!

You are so blessed to have a wonderful son. But being his Mom means that you have a lot to do with how he has become and still will become. Which means you must be a wonderful Mom.

Maybe I can say he has a terrific Dad in my husband, and that has been a great influence. Good church leaders, seminary teachers, etc. But I really believe there is just some luck here too.

Doesn't it feel good? That's how I feel about my Little Guy (most of the time). We'll see if it sticks. Cute pics!

He really is an extraordinary teenager. We all adore him! He has a GREAT sense of humor! Every mom should be blessed with at least ONE easy child! :)

And actually, lucky HIM, too, not only for having such great parents, but also because the few kids who are naturally good like that just seem to have an easier, happier life...they bypass so many struggles and problems and heartaches. I wish we could help all our kids understand, it's actually EASIER to be GOOD!
