day forty-four: thanks, man
Our principal took control of our collaboration time after school yesterday to spread some of his enthusiasm around a bit. He had recently been to a principals' academy and came back on fire about inclusion (keeping kids with special needs in the regular education as much as possible, seeing potential in all children to learn, etc). My thing. My thing.Today my student T didn't have a meltdown.
Today S talked (and talked).
Today G wrote the letter "B" all by herself.
Today I was a teacher.

It's so good to celebrate the small accomplishments. It makes for a good day.
Even though I am a very different kind of teacher than you are, it is definitely one of the most amazing feelings to see your students "get" something. Small or big...you just feel like you really matter to the world.
Yesterday the little boy with autism in my after school program WAVED at me when he came into the classroom. Hooray for small victories. :)
May I just say that I LOVE your attitude? You have a wonderful way of looking at the world, and I love to bask in it! Thanks for sharing!!

I love how exciting all those little things can be. Aaron's at a stage where every day he uses one or two new words. It's SO exciting. Tonight he was throwing around a little pillow. One time it fell behind the TV and he didn't see it fall (you know how when a two year old throws half the time it goes behind them). He started walking around saying, "Where!?! Where!?!" We were all so shocked. Anyway, I just love watching those little (sometimes tiny) milestones in the people you care about. That's probably why teaching and parenting are some of the most satisfying jobs. :)
