day sixty: beside a hospital bed
I am sitting here listening to boy #3 snore, finally, after a day of feisty fury at himself and at doctors. He is at Primary Children's Hospital in the trauma unit after spending the entire day at one hospital, then an ambulance, then finally here. After a day of biking, and hiking, and barely sleeping on the cold ground alongside his scouting buddies, he climbed a little hill and cracked a boulder off of it. Said boulder then chased him down and pinned him. And now I sit here and look at my handsome guy with his neck brace (just for precautionary reasons), and his splint on his foot and his cute body all hooked up to... things, and I just want to take him home and take care of him.
But it could have been so much worse. He could have hit his head, or broken his back. This will be a teaching and a learning time for him. He will learn something about himself as he sits and waits to heal. Sometimes a 13 yr-old needs to slow down and to listen to himself, his parents, and to the Spirit.
This time of healing could be just what the doctor ordered.

Great perspective, Karen.
This is so scary! You'll never guess how we heard -- somebody texted Jeff. I'm glad to know he's actually okay. It sounds like you're all handling it great. I'll include him in my prayers tonight -- both the thanking ones and the asking ones.
Can I bring you guys dinner tomorrow? Seriously. Let me --
xo
Oh Kazzy, I am so grateful that he is relatively safe. That it could have been worse, but he seems to be doing ok? I agree with Charrette. Great perspective. I am glad that you are handling this so well.
Thanks, guys. We will probably be here until Tuesday. I don't think they will want to send him home until he can get out of this bed. Not seeing him moving any time soon.
Thanks for the offer, C. I will keep you posted.
I've had an image in my head all day/night of him frolicking in the the beautiful red rock desert, then scrambling away from and pinned under that blasted boulder. I'm saying many prayers today, some of comfort and support and fast healing to the three of you, and some of gratitude that it wasn't a lot worse. I also can't stop thinking about what a miracle it is that he made the car ride home with minimal pain so he wasn't stuck in a small town southern Utah hospital away from you. Hugs.
wow life can happen so fast!! Glad he is ok!!
To find the gift buried in the heart of a trial is such a blessing of the spirit. That discernment is not so common a thing. Still, how your heart must be aching after all the exercise it has just had!
He is on the mend. Just a bit of a long road ahead, but thankful it wasn't worse. Thanks, everyone.
Like Charrette said, great perspective...
I'm sure it hurts to see him hurting!
I'm so glad it wasn't worse. So glad. So thankful.
Peace.
Oh my goodness! I am glad that he is doing all right, poor guy. And I really do love your view of the whole situation. You are awesome, and always so inspiring.
Oh, I hope all is well! My ten-year-old just threw up at church, pulled himself upstairs to change out of his vomit clothes, and fell asleep on the floor, too exhausted to do anything else. I think it's a reminder to me not to push him so hard.
I'm glad he's okay...for the most part. Hope you get to take him home soon.
Oh my gosh!! I hope everything is going okay. Be sure to let us know how things are going.
Wow.
Of course, I've known my share of 13 year olds in traction, and most of them think it's some side of hilarious. Especially when they show pictures to their friends.
How are YOU doing?!
Oh dear! There's some drama! Here's an experience you won't be forgetting soon. It sounds like you're all okay and he's going to be fine. Hope the healing goes well and that he does get (and use) that reflecting time!
Just getting caught up here. I'm so grateful that he's doing well and that you have been able to experience miracles in your life.
Prayers for you.
