sad sad stigma
I found out this morning that two moms came into the school office to withdraw their children from my class. Nothing personal. They just don't want the stigma of special ed following their kids around. It saddens me though. They are young enough to avoid any stigma, unless the parents create it, and to get early intervention. But I can't force it.On the upside, I have a couple of high school interns coming into my class to assist this year. It will be a great experience. For them, for the kids, and for me. I like seeing people get excited about teaching. I feel like a successful missionary when I see the flame get ignited.
I love my job. It is important and invigorating and inspiring. I hope to do it justice as I serve my little kiddos.

Wow...speechless!
On the plus side, yay for a new year, new kiddos, and new interns. Sounds exciting!!!
If only the parents could understand how important early intervention is. What will be worse is when their child is in 2nd grade, struggling to keep up and then have "the stigma of special ed" follow them around.
You're a great teacher. Excited for your new year!
I'm so excited for Calvin to start in your class this year! I know how hard you all work, and I know how wonderful your program was when Alice was in your class. It's so nice to know that when my kids are in school, away from me, that they are loved and cared for. As for the stigma of special ed, I agree with Miss Connie. On the other side though, I also know how hard it can be for a parent to admit their kids are a little less than perfect. I hope these kids get what they need somewhere along the way!
Early intervention saved our son and allowed him to be in a regular classroom. I don't get why there has to be stigma in the first place. Seems like they are the only ones placing a stigma in the first place. That in my opinion is what is wrong with our society. It starts with us moms. I could go on and on. Because, I believe strongly in early intervention, which will make a difference years from now.
well, sometimes I wonder if as parents we "create stigma" without even knowing it. Those children could have greatly benefited from your skills and love as a teacher.
