day 201: the golden statuette

This evening we will hold our 13th annual Oscars Party here at Chez Kaz.  We print off ballots and have prizes and eat lots of good food with our good friends.  It is fun to see what the celebs are wearing, guess in the categories we are totally clueless in, and hand out prizes at the end.  Oh yeah, I said prizes.  I don't want to give anything away, but I will just say that one lucky person is going home with Junior Minty breath!

So, in the spirit of the big event, and everything we love about movies, please leave a comment stating your favorite film and a brief reason why it is your fave.

I'll start.  All About Eve.  Bette Davis is absolutely killer in this movie as a soon-to-be washed-up actress.  It was perfect casting, and she is brilliant.  Emma and Meryl are my favorite actresses, but I still go with Eve for my fave movie.

Your turn...

I find 2001: A Space Odyssey to be an extremely profound movie and one that is all the more interesting when re-watched. It has a pace that defies the shoot-em-up sci fi movies popular since Star Wars, but it is a mistake to watch it as something in that kind of genre. It is a very thoughtful, especially if read in tandem with Arthur C. Clarke's novel by the same name.

I was going to write something clever and witty for "What About Bob" but decided to just say that my favorite movie is, "It's a Wonderful Life." If one watches a movie at least once a year and enjoys it each time, then it must be that person's favorite movie.

Have fun tonight.

That is probably number 2 for me. I love, love, love Jimmy Stewart in that movie. And the whole idea of Bedford Falls is pervasive through the whole thing.

Great picks so far!

Sound of Music is right up there for me. I love Julie Andrews, the scenery, and the music (I even went to a sing-along showing up at Sundance once).

In the totally non-serious category, we love "Forget Paris" and "The American President" at our house. My husband and I could probably recite both of them from beginning to end. These movies are like security blankets for us- perfect when we're sick, sad, or just need a good laugh.

I just don't think I could pick one favorite, but my facebook profile says my two favorites are Rudy and Son of Rambow. I love every single sports movie I've ever seen---but I never fail to cry in Rudy. And Son of Rambow is simultaneously hilarious and sweet. If you've never seen it, you must check it out.

Candy, love the "best remake with cuties" category. i think they should add that to the Oscars. You like movies, I can tell. And Emma, as I mentioned is a fave of mine. I loved her acceptance speech for S & S screenplay. So choice!

Man, it's just so hard to choose.

I also love 2001 and echo Gid's sentiments. Well, except for the part where he disses on Star Wars - that's right up there as well. Recently saw the movie "Moon" - not sure it's a favorite yet, but well worth seeing if you haven't yet.

Two great "man" movies that i just LOVE are "The Good, The Bad, and The ugly", and "The Dirty Dozen".

Then there's Casablanca - SO many good lines in that one.

Who doesn't love the sheer epic scope and beauty of the Lord of the Rings movies? Or the mind-bending theme behind The Matrix?

And believe it or not, i even love a good Hitchcock movie now and then, or just about anything with Marilyn Monroe (7 year itch? Total favorite).

And don't tell Lu - but ... Barbarella - awesome guilty pleasure :)

Spirited Away - do yourself a favor and borrow this if you haven't seen it. AMAZING anime flick.

Hmmm. Sense and Sensibility, is definitely in my top 10.
Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and Singin' in the Rain are classics. I love Wives and Daughters. Also, when I need a good cathartic cry I turn to Steel Magnolias. I also love Emma, the Gwenyth Paltrow version and the new Masterpiece theater remake. I adore Emma Thompson. I could listen to her voice all day long. Truly.

I loooove Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacLaine in that show. So funny!

Lanie | March 7, 2010 at 6:27 PM

I have two favorites that I can watch over and over again and it just so happens that Olympia Dukakis is in both of them. Steel Magnolias and Moonstruck. I just love the scenes with Cher and Nicholas Cage..GET OVER IT one of the funniest lines in the movie...

Well, I don't think I could choose just one! I love movies!
I love the movie Sabrina (1995) with Julia Ormond. That's probably the one I would pick. I also really, really loved The Blind Side.
Shane and I have been watching Sandlot, Every. Single. Day. for about 2 months, so it has kind of grown on me too. :) Or at least I have it memorized.

The Sound of Music--I love it as a family movie. It tugs at the heartstrings over and over. I usually forget movies after watching them, but I've seen TSM so many times, it's easy to remember :)

For me it's still a tie between Gone with the Wind and A&E's Pride and Prejudice. I guess I like them because I like my heroines with a bit of spunk. And any story worth telling should take at least three hours -- otherwise, it leaves me wanting. Come on, 5 minutes of exposition just won't cut it! I like to take some time to really get to know my characters. I want to miss them when our time together is through.

Right now, it's Family Stone or Juno. I have a soft spot for disfunctional families.

I will freely admit that I'm not much of a movie watcher, far preferring books. My attention span has great difficulty with the movie....too many distractions in the sound and the music and the camera work.

That said, my favorite is Oscar. 1991 with Sylvester Stallone and Marisa Tomei. It's hilarious...one of those unknown gems.

I also really love The Scarlet Pimpernel with Jane seymour and Anthony Andrews.

It was such a kick to see Bette Davis in Barbara Walter's special last night. I'm not sure if I saw her interview when it originally aired but, boy, she looked like an old queen in drag (though I agree with you about the Eve thing). As for your question, I can never really settle on one of anything--number, movie, book, genre, whatever--except for color. Definitely pink. And roses. Anything else, I just can't decide.

Kimberly Vanderhorst | March 8, 2010 at 12:17 PM

I have favourites in different genres, but I'll pick out my favourite obscure movie "Widows' Peak." Such a funny film with such an unexpected ending.

wendy | March 8, 2010 at 3:09 PM

Lola Sharp | March 8, 2010 at 3:43 PM

I can no more answer this, than chose a favorite book, or even author...or song.

I'm glad the hurt locker won over avatar.
