day 216: noticing it in others

In the continuing theme of older people than myself (see my Musical Monday post for this week), at book club we talked about noticing graceful, aging, other women, but being unable (unwilling) to see it in ourselves.  Why do we get like that?  Why do we allow others the privilege of beautiful gray hair and their own style, and we want to keep that away from us?  Interesting psychological walls we build.

Annie Lennox.  Coolness.

I think the little white hairs showing up on my head are fun, but whenever I go see Joey she tries to pluck whatever she finds.

However, there are other indignities to growing older that I'm not so thrilled with. No, I'm not going to confess them -- I'm in denial.

I think Annie Lenox is full of the awesome too...nice pick.

I am starting to get grey hairs (I just turned 40...yipes!) and I HATE them. I am now coloring my hair and occasionally tweezing the straggly, wiry out. In my head, I'm still in my late 20's, just not in the mirror.

Great, thought provoking post.

Love,
Lola

Who is "we?" Some of us were "persuaded" by others to embrace the gray hairs - every one of them!

I used you as an example of someone that looks awesome in her greyness. Really!

I adore Annie Lenox.

Beautiful thought. Perhaps I shouldn't begrudge my smile lines and expanding freckles quite so much...

For me it's easier to see the great things in someone else than it is in myself. In other women, no matter the age, I see power, strength, love creativity, wisdom, intelligence, beauty... I could go on.

I don't always see those things in myself. Like you said, psychological walls.

We do tend to see ourselves in a negative light...at least I do. I can't look at a picture of me without noticing the double chin or the not perfect nose or the freckles I hate so much. Where other people are much more likely to see the beauty. It's truly sad that we have a hard time seeing it in ourselves, because of course it's there!

What a great post. We do need to give ourselves credit. We can age just as gracefully as anyone else. It is hard to believe that sometimes, but thanks for the reminder.

I hope to age gracefully myself. It's interesting, as I get older I realize I am coming more into myself. Hopefully that means physically too!
