day 281: moo juice

Today I got a bottle of chocolate milk from the vending machine, brought it to my desk in class, and proceeded to guzzle it down like it was my last drink on my way to the gallows.  I sat there with my materials binder, my lesson plans, my textbooks, and my chocolate milk bottle right there at arm's length.  It was good.

I like to reward myself here and there.  And I like to put myself on a schedule.  These two things work really well together, like when I set the timer on the microwave and give myself 10 minutes to clean the kitchen floor, and after I run to turn it off before it beeps I allow myself 10 minutes on my reader catching up on blogs, news, etc.

Lots of things stand in for chocolate milk.  Time with my husband, playing with the kids, reading, blogging.

What can I say?  I work well on a deadline, especially when I get to treat myself afterwards.

Loved that! I do similar things. Sometimes I only let myself watch a show I like if I hop up and clean during the commercials. Also, with article writing I constantly set little goals (if I can get three done by 11:00 I can watch Larry King or after the next one I get to play with Spencer for ten minutes). Totally keeps things moving (and prevents me from jumping onto facebook or my Reader too much).

Chocolate milk sounds pretty good right now. I think I need to reward myself less often, though, and do more things worthy of reward.

I am with you on the schedule, baby! It's the only way I can get things done!

That is such a good idea. I wonder if I could pull it off. Discipline is like a foreign language to me.

My life works better when I do the same, but when I get in a funk I forget. Thanks for the reminder, it's been too funky around here lately. =)

Ha-I hope there are other things besides chocoalte milk to reward. That wouldn't motivate me:)

Maybe i shoudl set up a timer for how long it takes me to read blogs...

I love deadlines... haven't much tried rewards as a way of motivating myself.

I don't drink much milk, but if I do, it must be chocolate.

I need to just learn to reward myself AFTER I do the thing I should do. Then maybe I'd actually do it. ;)

A reward before is an interesting idea, Lara. :)

When I was still working I found ways to reward myself and I definitely liked routine and schedule. Up the same time, wash clothes the same day, groceries a particular day. Now you mention it, I haven't had chocolate milk in a long time. Now that I am not working I find I don't feel any pressure to get something done. Like the job to sort things in the garage to get ready for a neighborhood yard sale next month. I haven't been in the garage yet. Oh well. It has only been since Nov that I stopped working.

Hmmm...don't know about other things taking the place of chocolate milk...that is nectar of the gods!

Great post and really so true.

I should really try this, I think it could help me. Thank you.
Have a great weekend.

I have to play these kind of games with myself, or I'd never get anything done.

I can't even recall the last time I had chocolate milk.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend! :)

I work SO much better under a deadline, but I'm not disciplined enough to work under an arbitrary one. I need to know something besides a buzzer will be happening in 10 minutes in order to get the floor cleaned that fast.

I need more discipline...
