day 323: memories of rain

It was so loud we couldn't hear each other talking.  Pounding rain on a metal roof of a big warehouse.  My mind always goes right back to home, to Virginia, and when we walked outside it smelled like home.  Warm and damp and musty.  It was fun to wait it out.

The summer we lived with my parents before moving to CA to attend USC, it rained for 6 weeks out of the 10.  I do not exaggerate here.  42 days of rain in 2 and a half months.  Having lived in the west for a few years, I had forgotten about the culture of rain.  In that culture you check and talk about the weather often.  Here in dry Utah, not so much.  In that culture you don't plan an outdoor event without contingency plans.  Here, your chances of rain ruining plans are pretty low.

The lush greenery.  The natural sprinkler systems.  The slippery grass every morning.  A bit of Eden.

When we visited your parents it was amazing. I had no idea things could be so green. I didn't realize our level of green didn't even compare.

And being the desert creature I am, I remember swelling like a sponge in the humidity.

It was beautiful though.

Oh, I love it! When I nannied in Maryland I just loved how often it rained. And almost every weekend I was on the Beltway traveling to my sister's house through pouring rain that I couldn't see the car ahead of me in. Those were the days.

I grew up with rain (Vancouver) and sometimes I miss the fog and the must and the lush greenness of it all. But then I remember the way rain would trickle down my neck as I walked to school, and the cold and the damp, and I don't miss it quite so much. Lovely to travel back though. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

We are acclimating to the weather here in Nebraska and enjoy the heavy rain here. The sound and the benefits of all the rain are soothing for us.

Kim, I enjoy remembering all the rain brought to my home state- lush green landscapes, almost-spontaneously blooming flowers, etc. But give me a dry climate any day for daily living.

Yep, here in Georgia we live and breathe by the weather channel. Hence, 93* and heat index of 109* and 40% chance of rain this evening.

I'll take the rain over snow anytime. A little rain is enchanting I think.....like when we lived in British Columbia, I loved the freshness all the time.
Just have to have an umbrella handy.

rather that then a shovel.

I lived in Maryland before moving here to Utah. I miss that wonderful, deep green that comes from the moisture, but I don't miss that horrible humidity! I LOVE Utah and it's dryness LOL.

I am learning how much rain can affect life here, having lived in the west forever!

I love summer rain, especially thunder storms and how it can put you to sleep. I remember my first and only trip to Virgina. It is beautiful. I love that part of the country. About 3 years ago, we had a siblings trip (on my husbands side) we went to Vermont and it rained everyday. Loved it! Especially since we don't get that in Utah.

So . . .curiosity got the best of you? I did clarify. Go check. Nothing real exciting, wish, but not! Hope thing are well.

Growing up in Florida, I had no idea what "a dry heat" meant until moving to Phoenix. I yearned for rain when I lived there. yearned for it. One year I decided I would record everytime it rained in my journal.
It rained twice--once on Easter Sunday for about 3 minutes and once in December.
I need water. We're in the rainy season here in Colorado--it rains nearly every day around 4pm. I love it, look forward to it and let my kids play in it if there's no lightening.
I love when it rains overnight while we're camping--nothing like going to sleep with the little pitter patter of raindrops on a tent. love it!

Rain.

I love rain, in the way a desert dweller loves the promise and smell of rain. It's so very beautiful.

I never thought about a rain culture, but of course it would be there. I love visiting those climates, but then I love coming home to sun and dry heat. :)
