a new world order

I get the kids home at 4:30 p.m., allowing them a couple of hours after school to play and relax before we dig in. But once 4:30 strikes it is all about the books and the papers and the algebra. It has taken a couple of weeks to really get this in place, but the boys are getting the hang of things, and once it is flowing well, all of us feel less stressed out in the mornings, because we know it has been taken care of the afternoon before.

Cello and piano lessons are stuck in between homework and dinner, because we are swapping everything so that the mornings are less crazy. It seems to be working. A constant process, keeping the kids balanced. But we have a mantra this year, that we repeat regularly: Family first, church second, school third, friends last.

I do know how you love running on schedule. Everything working smoothly. You're very good at it.

I kind of misread this title and thought of Brave New World. I thought it would be about brainwashing.

I guess it kind of is. But in a good way.

Your new world order has everything in the right order, I think. Good for you getting everything in the best working order. We are working toward a schedule that will get all the millions of things the kids have to do before bed done so they get to sleep at 8 and will easily wake up at 6:30 so we can have scripture study in the morning. I really hate that school starts at 8.

Robin - LOL

Lisa - we have tried so many different things to try and meet that goal. This year we are trying dinner time. I set the table for dinner and put scriptures near everyone's plate. After we eat we read. Before we clean up. Before anything else. And I use beat up, paperback B of Ms. So far it has been my fave solution. :)

I love that you have a "house of Order" - with everything in its proper station. Soem days I feel like we push "school" to the front of our list, and I don't like it. I'm going to take a lesson from you here.

Way to go! We're still working out the balancing act and hopefully before to long we will figure it out, before the last month of school.

Keep up the good work :)

Totally with you on having less-rushed mornings. My day is much better if my morning isn't hectic. Even if that means I have more to do in the afternoon-I'm okay with it.

That's a pretty wonderful motto. I'm contemplating moving practicing to the morning this school year so our afternoons aren't so crazy....we'll see.

I am dreading getting this up and running. The real homework starts for us next week. Piano practice theoretically started yesterday.

That is so darn smart. I need to pull myself together.

WHAT?? Friends last? Family first? What kind of crazy world do you live in?

Oh wait, I think what I meant to ask is what kind of crazy world do I live in? Or even more to the point, what kind of crazy world does my son live in? FRIENDS FIRST, LAST AND ALWAYS. Before breakfast (if I let him), after school (I do let him), during homework (I don't let him), after dinner, during church, on the phone late at night, you get the idea...

Teenager-hood, here we come. (I don't think I can take it)

It is amazing to me how much of parenting is about changing schedules, getting all the ducks lined up in a row and then changing things again. However, I am grateful that I can always do things better. It gives me hope.
